» Second “Trash-2-Art” Exhibit Celebrates

Earth Month

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (March 16, 2009) – Art exhibit opens at the Tamarac Community Center (8601 W. Commercial Blvd, Tamarac) to celebrate the creativity of repurposed materials and feature the talents of local artists. The exhibit will run between March 31 and April 24, 2009 and officially opens on Thursday, April 2, 2009. The reception will be from 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m.

Earlier this month, Trash to Treasure, Broward County’s “open to all” creative reuse center, announced “Trash-2-Art,” an art competition and exhibit designed to spread the word about the importance of reducing consumption and reusing materials. Many of the items came from the Center’s warehouse were repurposed to create the art displayed. These items were disposed of by area businesses and residents and include packaging foam in various shapes and sizes, fabrics, computer disks, costume jewelry, bottles, buttons, tiles, caps, beads, and more.

“Our first “Trash-2-Art” exhibit, held in 2007, inspired the community to think more creatively about new uses for what we have labeled “trash.” We are excited to see what artists develop this year,” said George Gadson, renowned artist and Trash to Treasure board member.

Trash to Treasure, which is located at 1090 NW 53rd Street in Fort Lauderdale, opened its doors in May 2007. In addition to be a resource for materials, the Center also offers workshops to educators and others looking for new ways to creatively re-use materials. For more information, call 888.828.8242 or see www.trash2treasurefl.org. Trash to Treasure is a 501©3 not-for-profit organization.
